Ultimate Hunting & Fishing • View topic - Best rod reel combo for pike?

What would you recommend for the best rod & reel combo for nothern pike? I live on the West Coast and fish mostly for steelhead, would my steelhead rod & reel be okay or would it be better that I had a stiffer rod to catch the big pike averaging around 45 inches?

I fish for Pike in the Yukon and use a medium/light 6 1/2 to 7' rod with a spinning reel with about 20lb mono. Just make sure you use about a 12" steel leader, but don't grab the leader when you have a fish on or you will regret it. I catch 40"+ fish to about 35 lbs with this set up.

I have some photo posted on this web site for your review if you'r interested.

Good luck,

I fish for big pike with St Croix 6 1/2 ft rod Medium Heavy and Shamino baitcasting reel and use 17lb Mono. and I have caught numerious pike over 40+inches with the biggest goinng 47 and have never needed a stronger line or rod. I fly in to canada fishing lodges so I limit my self to 6 1/2 ft rod because I like one piece rods If I did'nt fly in I would buy a 7ft rod in MH> I also might try braided line next time I go for more casting distance and will buy Power Pro. I also can't say enough good things about St Croix rods in the legend series bass rods great Rod and life time warrenty & made in USA.
